Remembering William Hildebolt

William Hildebolt

With the passing of William Hildebolt, PhD, on March 28, The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences lost a loyal friend and alumnus.

Hildebolt, 76, rigorously advocated for students' financial stability and for the need to dispel food myths through the sharing of scientific knowledge. On March 7, the college had recognized him with the 2020 Meritorious Service Award.

Upon graduating from Ohio State, Hildebolt, of Winston-Salem, N.C., began an impactful career that included long tenures at both the Campbell Soup Company and later at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company before he started his own company. He later wrote a book about his experiences at Campbell Soup, where he led the team that developed Prego spaghetti sauce and was credited with approximately 20 patents. Proceeds from that book benefit Ohio State students.
