Hypertufa Class - Columbus, Ohio

Allen Fabian will teach you how to create a hypertufa trough in this two-part class. He is a talented craftsman at creating beautiful hypertufa containers! We are excited to have him offer to teach you this skill that dates back to the early 1800’s. Chadwick Arboretum Horticulturist, Wendy Bowman will be on hand to discuss planting suggestions and care. All attendees will learn about hypertufa troughs that were developed in England as an alternative to old stone sinks which were used to feed and water livestock. They provide excellent drainage and can highlight those special plants that you have. A planted trough can be a garden unto itself, highlighting a variety of textures, colors and heights. Each class participant will make two and keep one and give one to the arboretum. 

Session one takes place on June 26 from 9am to noon - Participants will learn about the history of hypertua, mix the ingredients, build a container, and learn how to release a finished container from its mold, with one on one instruction.

Session Two takes place on June 28th from 9 - 10:30 am - Participants will remove pots from mold and add texture. Hypertufa is perfect for Ohio weather year round, durable and long-lasting art in your garden. By the time you have ended the class, you will be able to teach the class yourself! All materials, gloves and handouts provided. Please come dressed in your garden clothes.
